Climate-adapted outdoor spaces are created through greenery, shade-providing trees, and the “sponge city” principle. A well-designed network of pedestrian and cycling routes, sufficient bicycle parking facilities, and shared mobility services such as electric cars and cargo bikes promote climate-friendly mobility. The standard provides developers, architects, and design professionals with considerable flexibility in meeting requirements and shaping districts, both for new developments and renovation projects. Individual buildings are only assessed to the extent that they influence the district as a whole. As a result, the analysis of individual buildings is less detailed, while greater emphasis is placed on the sustainable improvement of district-wide qualities. The grading system, in which the overall score is calculated as the arithmetic average of all individual scores, allows project teams to focus on specific priorities and, to a certain extent, compensate for lower scores in other areas. Historical data relating to this label have been integrated into the complete dataset. The 2000-Watt District label recognized urban developments that could demonstrate sustainable resource management for building construction, operation, renovation, and mobility generated by the district's activities. The certification was based on the well-known Energy City label combined with the SIA Energy Efficiency Path for Buildings. For district development projects, certification could be requested at an early planning stage and was awarded following an assessment of project objectives and a formal commitment to achieving them. Certification for a district development could be maintained until more than 50% of the building floor area intended for its planned new use had been completed and occupied. After that point, the district was required to undergo a renewed certification process to demonstrate its performance during operation.
